Our society is very media-dominated , and we’re fed a diet of hard luck stories – who’s cheated on who, and why it’s someone else’s fault when anything goes wrong in our lives.
Relatively recently, we looked across the pond at our American cousins, and were amazed at how litigious they were – now it seems we’ve been bitten by the same bug! Anyone watching daytime TV can’t help but notice the abundance of ‘no win no fee’ adverts from greedy lawyers looking for a fast buck if they can place the blame at somebody else’s door.
Everyone appears to know their ‘Rights’, but hardly anyone seems to understand the responsibilities that underpin those rights. People complain about the circumstances the live in, but leave it to someone else to solve their problems for them. They blame their boss, the economy, society, the government – in fact anyone rather than facing the truth.
But if things are going to improve, chances are the change will have to come from within. The same problems will keep coming our way until we conduct ourselves differently and learn to take responsibility – only then will the problem disappear and the lesson be learned. Imagine if we all took responsibility for what we did how different our society would be. Fifty years ago, more individuals were proud to see a job through and not quit on themselves and their families.
We can’t change the world, but we can change ourselves. Anyone who’s looking to study for self-improvement has already taken the first step in personal responsibility. Successful training will demand conscientious habits, and self-accountability.
Only you can be responsible for devoting time and energy to the task. Of course, your training provider also has responsibilities – to carry out their promises with quality learning and support materials. That’s a given, and must equally be taken seriously. But to be victorious, you have to assume your own responsibility to win through.
Learning can be fun and stimulating if approached correctly. It can sometimes take a little protecting yourself from outside negatives – soothsayers and critics are ten-a-penny if they think you’re going to get ahead of them. So take responsibility for your surroundings, and associate only with those who are happy for you to improve.
We’re fortunate in this country today to have the right to a quality of life unimagined in our grandparents’ day. But we will only truly achieve the pinnacle of modern day success when we have a greater regard for the responsibilities those rights carry.
